become = process from one state to another
be = continuous state

The verb 'become' implies a transformation from one state to another, to come to be.
Ex.: She became famous after she wrote a bestseller. (She wasn't famous before, but came to be famous later.)
The verb 'be', as Eliot said, refers to a continuous state, without any change.
