the meaning of "the wedding of the year" the passage is from BBC: It's the wedding of the year and everybody is invited! Well, that's not quite true. We can't offer you an actual invitation to Prince William and Kate Middleton's big day – all 1,900 of those have already been allocated – but we are offering you a very special way to get involved.

The pattern: /the XYZ of the year/ means that in the future when the year's XYZs will be remembered, this will stand out for importance; the implication is that this will be or was the most important. The expression is usually reserved for events with positive or neutral meanings, like sport competitions. /the wedding of the year/: the most important wedding for the year; it can be said now as weddings are planned in advance.
