There’s another decision. ‘background is’ and ‘backgrounds are’. Both are correct. It comes down to whether you feel your professional and educational activity was one background or whether they were two separate backgrounds. It just reflects how you feel about them.
On the other hand ‘rooted in communication’ sounds rather vague but not incorrect!
