Ideally, the best way to learn a new language is by immersion, that is to say, to live in the country where they speak the target language you are wanting to learn. However, this is not possible for many/most people so in my experience as someone who speaks 4 languages (Spanish, French, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese) the next best way is to combine different methods: 1. If you can afford it, take regular weekly lessons with native speakers of the langugage/s you wish to learn. 2. Find a language exchange partner who is a native speaker of the language you want to learn and practise with them in a mutually beneficial way. 3. Watch films in that language, listen to music and learn some of the lyrics to the songs. 4. Practise with native speakers whenever you have the opportunity. Ask permission to practise with them if you are only at a beginner level and ask them to correct you whenever you make a mistake. 5. Use language websites/language learning platforms. Websites like Lingopie offer very good opportunities to watch films. 6. Study your preferred languages in a language school abroad. I have done this twice for 2 weeks at a time in Madrid, Spain and once in Paris, France. 7. Take holidays abroad where you can practise your language skills. Don't be afraid to make mistakes....just be sure to learn from them! 8. Keep persevering even when you get it wrong. Don't give up!
