初めまして！(Hajimemashite!) My name is Max, and I am currently teaching Japanese at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia! I lived in Japan on and off for three years while teaching English to pre-school through junior high school. In the process, I learned that I love teaching and decided to be a certified Japanese teacher in the U.S.! I have been learning Japanese, almost exclusively on my own, for over 15 years, so I am up to date on all of the most valuable language learning tools available to date. My interests include learning other languages (right now I'm learning Korean!), health and nutrition, and, if I have time, anime and video games (especially Dance Dance Revolution). I'm always looking for the latest and greatest trends in language learning. Right now I am looking into how to use AI to aid in language learning, especially as a way of helping students begin to understand "authentic" (non-learner focused materials e.g. created by Japanese people for Japanese people) materials. I have found that the software that makes phenomenal use of AI in this way, and use it myself to further improve my own language abilities! I'm here to teach you that you can do hard things. I'm not just teaching you Japanese, but teaching you HOW to learn Japanese! Sensei Maxfield is a great teacher! Super fun lessons and each time I build more confidence to speak and explore my skill level. I always learn something new! He explains grammar in a relatable way and explores fun content to make the time enjoyable! I always look forward to practicing my Japanese with him.

Max does an incredible job of making learning fun and engaging! We went through a bunch of panels of a manga and read it together while he was able to explain any words/phrases/grammar I didn't know and answered all of my questions around it! Super fun way to teach and I had a great time with it!

Super enthusiastic right out of the first lesson! Very easy to get along with, gave a comprehensive introduction to basics right out of the gate and was very helpful when talking about future lesson plans and structuring lessons based on my needs.

Max was great at getting me set up to either learn with him or by myself and made it clear that he wanted to help me with my goals, regardless of if I was going to continue taking lessons from him! Super fun to talk to and very much recommend him for anyone that wants help getting started with where to learn Japanese and how to progress!
