Maggie Xiao (肖婷)

Maggie is a fantastic teacher, seriously, within three weeks she helped me reach a fluency which I only dreamed of before. I have been learning vocabulary for a long time, but never got anywhere with my spoken Chinese - thanks to her great teaching methods I've not only gained a lot more confidence in speaking, but finally understand a lot of more complex sentence structures. We went through most the HSK-3 text book together and frequently roleplayed the dialogues. This is a very effective method, as it builds a huge sentence pool and helps passively helps you see what kind of patterns there are. She was also a very effective communicator when it comes to grammar. Every lessons I've felt like I made some progress. Most importantly, she really cares about her students and loves her job, you can tell. She has a lot of experience and knows to push and encourage at the right times. Overall, an amazing teacher. Thank you Maggie!

Maggie is the best professional teacher you'll find on Italki. She've got cards, games, book + she got folder for each student. Super professional and organised. If you want to start that difficult but amazing journey in Chinese, she is the one

Maggie is a delightful teacher full of energy. She is great at helping with tones and pronunciation. We practised dialogues and she explained the meanings of various characters. She has been my favourite teacher of Chinese. Highly recommend.

Maggie is simply the best teacher someone could ask for.When I started my lessons with her I scored maximum 210 on my HSK3 practice tests. I took around 20 lessons with Maggie and we went through the HSK3 textbook together. She was amazing because she adapted our study plan based on my weaknesses (listening section). We tailored an approach plan together for each of our lessons and she would also send me very useful material after the lesson(summary of all the Measure Words and how to use them, practice tests, textbooks, etc.) After only 20 lessons with her I scored 280 for my actual HSK exam, and listening was the highest score I got! (97 out of 100, so only made 1 mistake) This would have never been possible without her help, her ability to improve the section I was bad at and the amazing tips she gave me I'm now doing new lessons with Maggie to prepare HSK4 and highly recommend her if you want to quickly improve in all aspects of Chinese (listening, reading, writing, speaking)

I was very excited about this lesson as a complete beginner and had even studied the first chapter of an HSK 1 book beforehand. The teacher was a bit late and went straight into the lesson without first asking about my background, expectations, or learning goals. It felt very one-directional, with little effort to understand how I learn or what I was hoping to get out of the class. During the lesson, there was a strong focus on perfecting tones right away. While I understand the importance of tones in Chinese, the level of emphasis felt discouraging for a first lesson. Comments like “not very good” were occasionally made, which didn’t feel very motivating for a beginner. Some aspects naturally take time, and focusing too much on perfection early on can make it harder to feel progress. Unfortunately, after the lesson I found myself questioning my motivation to continue learning Chinese, which was disappointing.
