Olá! I’m João, a certified European Portuguese tutor based in Lisbon. With a background in tourism, I specialize in practical language acquisition. I try to create a relaxed atmosphere with the students, so they can achieve their full potential while learning the language. My methodology is a mix between structured grammar with cultural immersion, focusing on conversational fluency for real-world use

Since I completed my TEFL certicate in 2017, I’ve taught both in the classroom and in private lessons, including nearly 5000 hours online. Teaching online requires a different set of skills as a teacher, and I believe over the past 6 years I have mastered these skills to provide a balance between learning grammar and vocabulary and spending as much time speaking and communicating as possible. I’m very happy with my classes with João. His guidance helped me make a big jump in my Portuguese at the beginning. Over the following 3 months, the progress was slower but consistent, and recently I reached another level thanks to his support.
Now, at mid A2 level, I can talk about ideas that come to my mind, not only beginner-safe topics.

With João I have classes focused on Grammar and on Conversation. He uses many different resources, such as ebooks and articles, and is always well prepared. We do grammar exercises, read articles and talk about many different topics together so that I can learn new vocabulary easily. João is always encouraging and creates a safe environment so that it's easy for me to speak Portuguese. Obrigada João!
