My name is Mark. I come from London in the UK. I have loved learning languages from a young age, when I first started learning Spanish and Mandarin. Coming from a family of travelers (my father was a pilot, my mother worked in travel too), I have always been interested in all things international. I love sharing language and culture with people around the world. I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but also abroad for more than 3 years. I've lived in Beijing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, studying Chinese and teaching English in schools and as a private tutor. I also love music, food, film, sport, and learning new things.

Moi en tant que professeur

From my own experience learning languages, I have found that for many people it is better to be self-driven. That is why I love italki, because anyone choosing to learn here is clearly very self-driven. My 2+ years as an English teacher and tutor showed me that people like to learn in many different ways, and it is important for me to listen to students and help them to learn the right way for them. I also understand that learning English is different depending where the student comes from. I believe that through italki, lessons are actually mainly driven by the student. I am here to help your idea of an ideal class become reality.

Mes leçons et ma méthode d'enseignement

I believe a relaxed lesson is the best way to learn. Conversation is the best learning tool because it is so flexible. For me, new vocabulary and grammar is so much easier to memorise when you are using it in conversation than if you are trying to learn it from a book. I am happy to talk about any subject you like - if you like art and music, or film and television, food, travel, history, really anything at all. Talking about things you are interested in is another way to make it easier to pick up your target language.

i-to-i TEFL Certification - i-to-i - 2016This was the 2nd TEFL course I undertook, in which I learned a lot about teaching English from a theoretical and practical standpoint. Information covered included phonemes and pronunciation, ways of acquiring a language, practical methods, and more.

Licence - Chinese StudiesUniversity of Wales Trinity Saint DavidMy Bachelor's degree was in Chinese Studies, a major component of which was studying Chinese language (Mandarin and also some Classical Chinese literature). One semester of my degree (half a year) was spent at a university in Beijing where I studied only Mandarin, 5 days a week.
