I’ve now had more than 120 lessons with Lydia over a 3 to 4 year period. If you are interested in Chinese, you won’t find a better teacher, here is why. Lydia 是一位非常友好和耐心的老师，能够适应我的学习方式。 每节课都很有趣，因为我们讨论很多不同的话题。 ‘‘论很多不同的话题’’ This is what makes our lessons very rewarding. It takes a very special teacher to help a student talk about many different things and not just follow a book. Lydia gave me the confidence to speak, to use what is available to me, to express myself in Chinese. Lydia has been a wonderful teacher for my teen son. He started learning Mandarin a few years ago, but then was away from it for a year. Lydia was able to catch him back up and has encouraged his growth ever since. She keeps the lessons focused with well planned objectives, and she also varies the lesson format to keep my son engaged. Some days he writes, others he speaks, and others he reads. She also varies the teaching style by incorporating games and interesting presentations. It is also very helpful that when my son struggles with characters or certain lessons, Lydia will take the time to review these with him and give him additional opportunities to practice. My son is challenged but is also well supported in his learning. I highly recommend Lydia.

I’ve been learning with Lydia for almost two years now, and my Chinese has improved so much. We use HSK books for structure, but she balances that with plenty of conversation practice, so it never feels boring or repetitive. She’s great at explaining things in a way that just clicks, and she always knows how to make the lessons fit what I need—whether it’s improving my speaking or focusing on reading and writing. What makes her stand out is how her lessons make learning Chinese fun and interesting. She mixes things up in a way that keeps me motivated to stick with it (and I'm learning just as a hobby). What could feel like a chore always ends up being something I look forward to every week. She’s super organized but also flexible—if I want to talk more or switch gears, she goes with it. It’s been amazing to see how much I’ve learned and I can’t imagine finding a better teacher!

Lydia is a very professional and diligent Chinese language teacher. She is an expert at customizing lessons to go at your pace and to coincide with your interests and goals in Chinese. I have worked with her for two years now and she has incorporated my interests in Tai Chi and Chinese dance into my Foundational HSK lessons to make an excellent complement to my personalized lessons. She translates songs, videos, and specialized material for me and puts in extra effort to give me all the background needed to understand the material better. She is a joy to work with and always has a friendly smile and words of encouragement throughout each and every lesson. I highly recommend Lydia for your Chinese language goals!

Even when we don't meet for a couple of weeks, I can tell that I'm slowly improving thanks to the materials shared after class and the systematic review!

I've been working with Lydia for almost a year since I downloaded HelloChinese on a whim and started learning basic mandarin. In the first lesson I could barely form simple sentences and my pronunciation was poor. We started from the basics of pinyin, going through initials + finals and mixing in some speaking practice. After making it through pinyin we skipped straight to the HSK2 curriculum. All the lessons have been great so far - I've become a lot more confident in my (rudimentary) speaking abilities and she's mixed in a lot of interesting content about Chinese holidays and culture. In each lesson she writes down all the new vocabulary in a PDF that she sends after which makes it really easy to refer to it later, or turn in to Anki cards. A year later, the content is harder, butI still feel like I'm making steady progress. Her lessons have become an enjoyable part of my weekly routine and I am really thankful for her patience and encouragement in my Chinese learning journey!
