Welcome English learners! Today we’re continuing the conversation between Jennifer and James. In the last episode, James had just met Jennifer while he was walking in the park. Her dog had fetched a ball and had come close to him. Jennifer was in the middle of telling him why she started dog sitting for her friend. Listen to the story in this episode to grow your vocabulary and listening skills. Enjoy! “I was having coffee with my friend, Sarah, and we were talking about how difficult it is to live up to the standards of being a “modern woman.” Jennifer started her story. “Oh, that sounds like an interesting conversation…” James responded. “I’ve always felt like it must be almost impossible for women to balance career and family. Especially single women.” “Well, yeah, that’s what we were saying to each other. There’s a lot of pressure on women to be “independent,” as if they don’t need men in their lives. I think marriage and family are great and I hate the stigma that is sometimes given to housewives in our society.” “That’s an interesting perspective to hear from a woman.” James replied. “You wouldn’t know that based on what you see in the media.” “Exactly. Anyways, Sarah is married, so she and her husband are taking a trip this weekend. She works as an accountant, so she stays busy, but she wants to have kids, too. That’s why we were talking about “modern women.” Anyhow, I offered to watch their dog for the weekend, so here I am!” Jennifer explained. “I see. That’s nice of you to do for her!” James appreciated this small act Jennifer was doing for her friend. He wanted to learn more about her, but she had a question for him. “So, what brings you out to the park on a Saturday morning?” Jennifer inquired. “I like to go for a walk when I’m thinking about something.” James told her. “Ah, ok. So, can I ask what’s on your mind?” Sarah asked with an inquisitive look on her face. James was more than happy to tell her.

What happened after the ice melted?

I can only fit 2000 characters here, so here's the most important examples: I picked up my phone and keys from the table and left the apartment. I was walking to the elevator when my phone rang. I picked up and Tanya asked me if I could pick her up from work at 2 instead of 5 o’clock, because she was sick. She had picked up some virus at work. I said, “I will try, but business has been picking up lately—I’m very busy, so I’m not sure if I can be there on time.” She was not happy. We kept talking as I stepped into the elevator. At that moment my phone stopped receiving signal and the call dropped. I held it higher, hoping I could pick up some bars of signal, but no luck. Later that afternoon, I was on the highway. I was late and traffic was very slow. The time was about 2:15. Tanya called, upset. She said, “Max, where are you?” and I said, “I’m almost there, traffic is bad and I had to work until 1:45.” Tanya responded, “I think I’m picking up on the fact that work is more important to you than I am. And another thing! Lauren said she saw you at the club last weekend trying to pick up some girl.” Just then, the traffic around me began to pick up speed. “Look—I’ll be right there, we’ll pick up some pizza and pick up this conversation later on. Just wait till we get home, alright?” 7) Justin picked up on the fact that no one else in the room wanted to talk to him from the way they wouldn’t look him in the eye, and only said things like “Oh, interesting!” when he spoke. ... Captain, I’m picking up something on the radar, there are submarines nearby! He picked up a certain level of annoyance in her voice, but ignored it as he wanted to eat his sandwich. 9) I need to pick up something for my sister’s birthday—any ideas? 10) Let’s pick this movie up where we left off tomorrow. 11) In Germany I picked up a little German.
