In this lesson, we will discuss the idea of the Monomyth, more commonly known as the hero's journey, and its role in cultural preservation and understanding how storytelling contributes to societal views and functionality coupled with the idea of traditional storytelling as a catalyst for deeper intercultural exchange.
このクラスを受講して学習できること
In addition to holding a native conversation with attention to critical thought, students will engage with the following 9 learning outcomes:
1. Analyze the role of storytelling in shaping and maintaining cultural identity, values, and worldviews within various societies.
2. Understand the significance of oral traditions in preserving cultural heritage and history, and appreciate their contribution to intergenerational knowledge transfer.
3. Recognize the value of cross-cultural storytelling in promoting empathy, understanding, and meaningful connections between diverse communities.
4. Examine the ways in which stories from different cultures reflect and address social, political, and environmental issues, and discern the unique insights that can be gained from these narratives.
5. Evaluate the impact of evolving technology and media on traditional storytelling methods, and explore potential opportunities and challenges in sharing and preserving cultural stories.
6. Identify instances where cultural storytelling has driven social change or increased awareness of critical issues, and appreciate the power of storytelling in inspiring action.
7. Explore the methods through which various cultures employ storytelling to transmit moral values, ethical principles, and life lessons and apply these insights to personal growth and understanding.
8. Gain familiarity with diverse storytelling techniques, styles, and mediums across cultures, and appreciate the richness and variety of global narrative traditions.
9. Compare and contrast themes, characters, and narrative structures in myths, legends, and folktales from different cultures, and recognize the commonalities and differences that reveal aspects of human nature and cultural diversity.

In addition to my master's degree, I also hold a teaching license from the state of Massachusetts (Grades 5-12) and have worked with the board of education in Japan for the past year.
