日本の食料自給率を知っていますか。食料自給率とは、国内で消費された食料のうち、国内で生産された割合のことを言います。農林水産省の発表によれば、2021年度の日本の食料自給率は38％とのことです。
少ないと思いませんか。えー、どうした日本って感じですよね。

この数値は、つまり38％が国内で生産されたもので、残りの62％は海外からの輸入に頼っているということになります。日本の食料自給率は主要先進国のなかでも最低の水準だと言われています。
そのため、現状に危機感を覚える向きも少なくないんです。海外依存度が高ければ高いほど、輸入元の国が不作になってしまったり、戦争などの情勢によって輸入ができなくなったりすると、途端に食料不足になってしまうからです。昨今は、コロナウイルスの感染拡大に加え、戦争も起きていますから、日本は食料においても、エネルギー資源においても、危機的な状況に立っていると言えるのです。言うまでもなく、輸入している食材が多いですから、今は毎月のように、食品の値上げは続いています。
ただ、コメの自給率は主食用において100％なので値段は変わりません。
でも、このコメを食べなくなってしまった日本人ですから、食料品の値上げは家計を逼迫（ひっぱく）することなるでしょう。

この自給率の低さは、「カロリーベースの算出方法を使っていること」にも影響しているようです。
カロリーベースによる自給率の算出は、国際標準ではないという問題があります。
しかし、カロリーをとても気にする日本人消費者のことを考慮すると、この算出方法を変更することは容易ではないようです。
カロリーベースの算出方法を適用している国は、日本のほか、韓国や台湾など、一部の国に過ぎません。

また、食べられずに廃棄された食料も分母に含まれていることも影響しています。年間2000万トンもの食品廃棄のある日本では、必然的に自給率が低くなるという側面があります。そのため、より多くの品目の国内生産に力を注ぐより、食べ残しや消費期限切れで捨てられる食料、いわゆる食品ロスを減らした方が自給率自体のアップにつながるとの指摘もあります。
食品ロスわかりますか。これかなり問題なんです。検索エンジンに「コンビニ　食品ロス」と入力し、画面検索をかけると、すぐにわかると思いますが、コンビニ1店舗1日平均10kg以上の食品が捨てられている現状があります。
日本の家庭において、「食べ物を残さず食べることは美徳」であるとされてきました。日本人なら幼いころ、食品のありがたみを考えることを、親や教師など周囲の大人に教育された経験が誰しも少なからずあるはずです。ただ、そんな日本であっても、残念ながら社会システムが生み出す“食べ残し”については、なかなか解決の糸口が見えにくのが現状のようです。
今日は、日本の食料自給率についてお話しました。みなさんの国はどうですか。
