今週、熊本県で大きな地震がありました。地震が起きたときは、あわてないで、正しい情報を知ることが大切です。また、普段から地震が起きたらどうするか、家族と話しておくといいです。熊本のみなさんの安全を祈っています。

今週（こんしゅう）、熊本県（くまもとけん）で大きな（おおきな）地震（じしん）がありました。地震（じしん）が起（お）きたときは、あわてないで、正しい（ただしい）情報（じょうほう）を知る（しる）ことが大切（たいせつ）です。また、普段（ふだん）から地震（じしん）が起（お）きたらどうするか、家族（かぞく）と話（はな）しておくといいですよ。熊本（くまもと）のみなさんの安全（あんぜん）を祈（いの）っています。

【English】 
There was a large earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture this week. When an earthquake occurs, it is important to stay calm and seek correct information. Also, it is a good idea to talk with your family beforehand about what to do if an earthquake happens. We pray for the safety of everyone in Kumamoto.

起きる（おきる）：to occur / to happen
あわてる：to panic / to be flustered 
正しい（ただしい）：correct / right
 情報（じょうほう）：information
大切（たいせつ）：important

安全（あんぜん）：safety
祈る（いのる）：to pray

【Grammar Notes】 
🔶 Verb (Short Form Past) + とき　　When... 
Example: 
地震（じしん）が起（お）きたとき、家（いえ）にいました。 
I was at home when the earthquake occurred. 
子供（こども）のとき、よくこの公園（こうえん）で遊（あそ）びました。 
When I was a child, I often played in this park.

🔶 Verb (Te-form) + おく 　To do something in advance 
Used to describe an action performed in preparation for a future event or for a specific purpose. 
Example: 
家族（かぞく）と話（はな）しておくといいです。 
It is good to talk with your family in advance. 
パーティーの前（まえ）に、料理（りょうり）を作（つく）っておきます。 
I will cook the food in advance before the party.

🔶 〜たら　If / When
Verb (Short Form Past) + ら 
Example: 
地震（じしん）が起（お）きたら、あわてないでください。 
If an earthquake happens, please do not panic. 
明日（あした）雨（あめ）が降（ふ）ったら、出（で）かけません。 
If it rains tomorrow, I will not go out.
