Seeing, Hearing, Feeling and Seeming — The Malayalam Verbs of Perception | Learn Malayalam #286
説明
Malayalam divides perception differently from English — and that is why learners misuse these verbs for years.
കാണുക means to see and also to meet. കേൾക്കുക means to hear, to listen and to obey. A smell comes to you rather than you smelling it. And തോന്നുക — to seem, to feel, to think — may be the single most useful construction you learn this year.
Words in this class:
കാണുക (kaanuka) – to see; to meet
നോക്കുക (nokkuka) – to look
പിന്നെ കാണാം (pinne kaanaam) – see you later
കേൾക്കുക (kelkkuka) – to hear; to listen; to obey
എനിക്ക് കേൾക്കുന്നില്ല (enikku kelkkunnilla) – I can't hear
മണം (manam) – a smell
നല്ല മണമുണ്ട് (nalla manamundu) – there's a good smell
രുചി (ruchi) – taste
മധുരം (madhuram) – sweet
എരിവ് (erivu) – spicy hot
ചവർപ്പ് (chavarppu) – astringent
തൊടരുത് (thodaruthu) – don't touch
എനിക്ക് അങ്ങനെ തോന്നുന്നു (enikku angane thonnunnu) – it seems so to me, I think so
എനിക്ക് മനസ്സിലായി (enikku manassilaayi) – I understood
In this class:
• See, look and meet — കാണുക and നോക്കുക
• Hear, listen and obey — the three jobs of കേൾക്കുക
• Smell, taste and touch, including the sixth taste English has no word for
• തോന്നുക and the dative: seeming, thinking, feeling and suspecting in one verb
