Causatives and Favours — Part 3: Had It Done, and the Malayalam Please | Learn Malayalam #29
説明
English needs 'had it done' and 'please'. Malayalam does both jobs inside the verb.
The first half is the causative. Add -ikk (past -ichu) and ഉണ്ടാക്കി, I cooked, becomes ഉണ്ടാക്കിച്ചു, I had it cooked. You learn how to name the real worker with -e kondu, the three-rung ladder from കരഞ്ഞു to കരയിപ്പിച്ചു, and verb pairs such as padikkuka and padippikkuka (to learn, to teach). The second half is favours: the past stem plus a helper verb, and a four-step ladder ending in ഒന്ന് ചെയ്തു തരുമോ?, which Malayalis use where English says please.
