We know we should appreciate people more often but do we know how to acknowledge them and why is it even so important? 

In a conversation when you acknowledge people, they feel heard and valued. They become more open-minded even if you are opposing their beliefs. It’s because, through your acknowledgment of their ideas, they know that you have been listening and you understand where they are coming from. If you want to do business with people or maintain a good relationship with them, without learning how to acknowledge people, you will get nowhere.

Acknowledging is easy.

Just paraphrase what they said and follow up with a relevant question or your opinion. Paraphrasing proves that you understand them since you express their ideas using your own words. 

During negotiations or discussions even if you disagree with people, you can make them hear you out by disagreeing politely or by partially disagreeing with them. A strong disagreement shows that you are unwilling to talk. This makes the negotiation take a negative turn and go downhill. 

So, disagree politely and follow up with relevant questions to show that you are interested in learning more about them. 

What you do is often reciprocated. When you listen, they listen. When you show interest in people, they will show interest in you. When you acknowledge them, they will acknowledge your work, ideas, and suggestions.

Acknowledge people. Have more discussions and not arguments.

Statements: "I feel like I'm constantly being watched," "I don't have autonomy in my role," "My manager doesn't trust me to make decisions," "I'm overwhelmed with constant check-ins."

Questions: "How can I communicate my need for more autonomy?" "What strategies can I use to build trust with my manager?" "How can I handle excessive workload due to micromanagement?" "Is it appropriate to set boundaries with my manager?"

Situation: Manager Accused of Micromanagement
Statements: "I'm just trying to ensure the work is done correctly," "I want to be supportive of my team," "I'm afraid of making mistakes," "I have high expectations."

Questions: "How can I delegate effectively without losing control?" "How can I build trust with my team?" "What are the signs of micromanagement?" "How can I empower my employees to take ownership of their work?"

Statements: "Micromanagement is killing our morale," "We need more trust from management," "I feel like I'm not learning or growing," "This is affecting our productivity."

Questions: "How can we address micromanagement as a team?" "What can we do to improve communication with our manager?" "How can we create a more empowered work environment?" "Are there specific examples of micromanagement we can share?"

Situation: Organizational Level Discussion
Statements: "Micromanagement is a systemic issue," "We need to develop leadership training," "We need to redefine our management philosophy," "This is impacting our company culture."

Ciao e bentornati!
 Oggi parliamo di come comportarsi in un negozio di abbigliamento in Italia.
 La regola fondamentale è una sola: cortesia!

👉 Prima di tutto, si entra sempre salutando, non con un “ciao”, ma con:
 — Buongiorno!
 — Buonasera!

👉 Poi, quando chiedi qualcosa, meglio usare il condizionale e dare del Lei.
 Invece di dire: Io voglio questo, prova con:
 — Vorrei provare questa camicia, per favore.
👉 Se chiedi il prezzo, non dire solo: Quanto costa?
 Meglio:
 — Quanto costa, per favore?
👉 E ancora: se vuoi qualcosa, non usare comandi diretti come Dammelo!
 Molto meglio:
 — Potrei avere questo, grazie?
👉 Anche quando chiedi varianti, la cortesia è la chiave:
 — Avete per caso questa giacca in blu?
👉 Altre frasi utili da ricordare:
 — Posso provarlo/la?
 — C’è una taglia più piccola/più grande?
 — Mi potrebbe dare un’altra misura, per favore?
 — Potete farmi un pacchetto regalo, per favore?
 — Accettate la carta di credito?

Curiosità
Un piccolo trucco: il condizionale è una delle chiavi dell’educazione.
 Non serve sempre dare del Lei – che può sembrare complicato all’inizio – perché anche con il tu si può risultare gentili. Basta usare il condizionale e le formule magiche: per favore, grazie, prego.
Se in un negozio di scarpe dite “Voglio quelle scarpe, numero 39”, può sembrare un po’ brusco.
Se invece dite “Vorrei provare quelle scarpe, numero 39, per favore”, l’effetto è subito più gentile e naturale.

Così sarete sicuri di fare un’ottima impressione, senza complicarvi la vita con troppa formalità.
e ricorda in Italia la cortesia è apprezzata anche nei piccoli acquisti: un sorriso e un per favore aprono sempre le porte!
