In Spanish, the gerund (-ando / -iendo) is used to express an ongoing action, similar to the English -ing form. However, it cannot be used as a noun or adjective, unlike English. ✅ Main uses 1. Actions in progress Estoy estudiando. → I am studying. 2. Simultaneous actions Entró cantando. → He entered singing. 3. Manner (how something happens) Aprendí español viajando. → I learned Spanish by traveling. 4. Describing cause or consequence Perdió el tren llegando tarde. → He missed the train because he arrived late. ❌ Incorrect uses (false English equivalents) You cannot use the gerund as a subject or noun: ❌ Fumar es malo → Smoking is bad (But in Spanish you must use the infinitive: Fumar es malo.) You cannot use it as an adjective: ❌ La mujer conduciendo → The woman driving (Correct: La mujer que está conduciendo.)
Which sentence uses the gerund correctly?
Caminando es bueno para la salud.
Vi a Juan corriendo por el parque.
La persona hablando es mi hermana.
