Located at 15 kilometers southwest of Tiananmen square, cross the Yongding River, the Lugou Bridge is the oldest multiple-arch stone bridge that still exists in Beijing today.
The Lugou Bridge was built in 1192 at first and rebuilt in 1698. It is supported by 281 columns, and each of which is carved by stone lion. There are many lions hide on these stone lions' head, back, paws or under its belly. These life-like stone lions are different in pose and various in expressions, which are fantastic pieces of Lugou Bridge's art of stone carving. It is often said in Beijing that the stone lions on the Lugou Bridge are too many to be counted because there are numerous stone lions to be seen on it.
The Lugou Bridge is not only famous as its beautiful art characteristics, but also widely known as a milestone in the history of stone bridge building.
