On August 24th of this year, Japan began releasing over 1 tones of treated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean, which has triggered backlash at home and abroad. Despite the claim of the International Atomic Energy Agency that the impact on health and the environment would be negligible, people are still up in arms. The masses’ worry about the wastewater has driven the domestic fisheries and seafood industry to the edge. With little evidence to support that the release is safe environmentally and healthwise, people may not opt for seafood produced by the origin of the wastewater discharge, dealing an immense blow to the entire industry. Moreover, China has accused Japan of treating the ocean as its private sewer. Optimism about the discharge has erupted around every corner of the Chinese native social network, with the shared concern of potential long-term health hazards to both human beings and marine life living in the Pacific Ocean. In short, people’s restoration of trust in Japan may take a long time. Until more data is evaluated to justify Japan’s discharge, they should defer the discharge immediately.
