I see big difference between payments ten years ago and now. Ten years ago most payments were done in cash. Only small amount of people had payment card, because it uses to be paid service. Banks started to provide payments cards as a standard and free of charge service about seven years ago. Therefore, amount of transactions made by cards have increased since then. I suppose that Covid pandemic increased that number too. Contactless cards are very popular here, more than 90% of transactions made by cards are done by contactless cards. Number of shops where cards are accepted increased as well. Nowadays, especially young people, use even their mobile phones or smart watches for paying. Personally I use Fitbit pay as it is very comfortable and my watch is accessible right on my wirst. Also, I do not need to search for my wallet while in queue, but simply activate payment mode on my watch. Barely I use cash. On the other hand some mostly elderly people do not have bank accounts or do not trust in safety of payment cards. There is also group of people who do not want to be tracked and are afraid of misusing of personal data through those cards. Last group of people who prefer cash to cards are of course criminals as they need to hide their illegal actions.
