Hello Is "against" optional? Or different Spain played Germany = Spain played against Germany

Some meanings of ‘against’ suggest hostility and aggression, e.g. ‘starting a war against’. It’s not needed for sporting events since both teams have mutually agreed to play each other. But I think adding it does make it sound a tiny bit less friendly.
