existence of zoos is a question often debated nowadays. While is undeniable that
some of them keep the animals in terrible conditions the good ones have a great
importance.
Without zoos, our options are thin and decrease daily. It is clear
for everyone that no creature is as free behind bars as it is running in the
wild. However, although some zoos have a worrisome problem with maintance and
infrastructure, some do a valiant job in protecting endangered species that
have nowhere else to go. In other words, on one hand you have the incarceration
and hunger of horrible zoos, while on the other you have the protection from harm in the
good ones.
Zoos are not the only option for wildlife preservation. You also have
Safaris, Animal Shelters and Natural Reserve areas. Yet, such alternatives are
not always possible. With increasing deforestation and hunting, bigger areas can
become way harder to protect. For instance, many reserves in Africa and in the
Amazon have to use highly trained armed professionals to defend the fauna.
Safeguarding the wildlife is a challenge with increasing difficulties.
Usually, zoos are one of the best soutions for animals that have lost almost completely their
habitats. The ones that should be closed are the zoological gardens that are more
like a prison than an a centre to boost the survival chances of species. Furthermore,
when possible, options closer to nature and with more space should be
protected by competent professionals and countries governments.
