Metaphor is an effective means to objectify abstract ideas and conditions such as joy, sorrow, and human emotions. Through startling metaphors, some Chinese poets were able to objectify the mental state of confusion, sorrow, and melancholia. It is a spring river rolling eastward. In their use of bold metaphors, classical Chinese poets pioneered a way of creating images admired and emulated by the modernist poets in the West. In fact, the same technique of presentation was used by the English metaphysical poets in the 17th century and by classic Chinese poets since high antiquity. In a poem, he objectifies the undying love of a person in two poetic lines with two unusual metaphors: “a spring silkworm won't die until it spits out its silk;/ a candle will stop shedding tears only after it is burnt.” In another poem, he employs a conceit to describe the acute lovesickness of a girl who, confined to her boudoir, can only while away her monotonous life by burning incense and pining away.

Through startling metaphors, some Chinese poets have been able to illuminate mental states of confusion, sorrow, and melancholia. It is a spring river rolling eastward. I don’t know how autumn frost Suddenly appears in the bright mirror. In such use of bold metaphors, classical Chinese poets pioneered a way to create images that came (which came? the "way" or the "images") to be admired and emulated by the modernist poets in the West. In fact, the same technique of presentation had been used by the English metaphysical poets in the 17th century and by classic Chinese poets since high antiquity. In a poem, one such poet objectifies an undying love in with two unusual metaphors: “a spring silkworm won't die until it spits out its silk;/ a candle will stop shedding tears only after it has burnt.” In another poem, the same poet employs a conceit to describe the acute lovesickness of a girl who, confined to her boudoir, squanders her monotonous life burning incense as she pines away.
You can say "poets have been able" rather than "were able" because the poets are still with us, even if they are no longer living. When you write about an artist who lived long ago you can sometimes talk in present tense because it is actually the artists' work you are talking about.
