To Change: Means to replace already existing thing or condition with another thing. To Alter: Means to add or adjust something to be become better or worse than it was before.

Alter tends to mean a smaller change, for example you would alter a dress, take the hem up etc, to change the dress would mean get another one.

To alter something is too make a slight edit or change to something. To change something would be too completely replace or do something more major to it. Example of alter. Person 1: “ These pants are a little to long.” Person 2: “ We can make an alteration to pant legs by Hemming the ankles. “ Example of change. Person 1: “I need to change my outfit/clothing to something more formal.” I hope this helped.

Alter is a subset of change, means a small but significant change.
