The main activities people in Japan do for entertainment include watching TV, gaming, eating out, travelling and doing sports. During the pandemic, people leaned towards indoor activities, but tourism and events have been clawing back the popularity.
Having said that, TV is still thriving in Japan. Variety shows entertain wide age groups with news, gossip and jokes. It is interesting that TV has started collaborated with the internet to retain viewers. Deleted scenes or bloopers can be watched there. At the same time, it seems to me that more and more TV programmes are trying to break the boundary of the screen to make viewers feel like they are there together. One of popular TV shows today is a talk show where TV personalities chat about this and that in a natural, casual manner, while drinking. This kind of shows creates a feeling that it's just happening right next to you. As if you were sitting at the table of the popular group.
