Dan’s answer is correct. The two statements can’t have the same meaning.

I would disagree with the others. These don't quite mean the same thing. How was the interview going? = How was it going at some specific point in time, not the overall outcome. How did the interview go? = What was the overall/final outcome of the interview. These could even have opposite answers. Ex: The interview was going really badly at first because I was too nervous. But I calmed down and we talked about my skills. I ended up getting the job, so in the end, the interview went great!

Hey there! Both questions have the same meaning, asking about the outcome or experience of an interview. However, there are some nuances to consider: "How was the interview going?" This question is typically asked during the interview or very soon after it has started. It is present continuous, implying the interview is still in progress or the person asking expects it to be currently ongoing. "How did the interview go?" This question is asked after the interview has been completed. It is in the past tense, which indicates that the interview is over and the person is inquiring about the overall experience or outcome. In summary, while they aim to find out about the interview, the timing implied by each question is different. Hope this helps!

I agree with David and Dan and will explain why in grammatical terms. The essential reason questions #1 and #2 differ is grammatical. #1 requests a DESCRIPTION of the interview because "going" is an adjective describing "the interview". Adjectives DESCRIBE. #2 asks WHAT HAPPENED at the interview because "did" is an active verb and verbs make things HAPPEN. Those two questions are not the same. Description and action are different things. In a description you can say whatever you want. You could talk about the clothes they were wearing, what the room was like, or what was the mood, as well as what actually happened. It is open ended. "What happened?", by contrast, is a more specific request to know about the action that took place.

Yes, both sentences have the same meaning. However, the second sentence is more grammatically correct and commonly used: 1. How was the interview going? (Less common, can imply you are asking while the interview is still happening) 2. How did the interview go? (Common and correct, asks about the interview after it has finished)
