コミュニティ チューター🇮🇹✨ The Italian “L” Sound — Light and Clear, Not Heavy
One interesting thing I’ve noticed while teaching Italian is that many English speakers pronounce the L sound a bit too “heavy.”
For example, in words like film, bella, or nella, the Italian L should be light and clear, not dark like in English words such as milk or ball.
🗣️ In Italian, the tongue touches just behind your upper front teeth — the airflow goes around the sides of the tongue, making a clear “L” sound.
In English, especially American English, the L at the end of words is often “dark” — the back of the tongue moves up toward the soft palate, which gives a heavier sound.
💡 Tip:
Try saying bella or nella while keeping the sound at the front of your mouth — don’t pull your tongue back. It should feel lighter, brighter, and clearer.
