You can have a collaborator for a project - a person who is working on the same project. Collaboration has a time and place limitation. Cooperation is more of an act of free will or of an agreement. It can also describe a person - "he is a very cooperative employee".

Collaboration involves closer (and usually more integrated) contact than cooperation. Two countries might 'co-operate', by following their own route, but to achieve a common/ joint objective. If they 'collaborated' this would imply that they were working closely together, maybe following a single (joint) route to achieve their objective.
