We learn without grammar when we are children, because we have our mother to speak to us, to teach us how to speak. We listen to the examples we hear, and our family surrounds us with language. To communicate with them, we learn.
Learning a language later in life is a pale experience compared to that. If we had a chance to be truly immersed, we would actually learn, with or without rules. But rules are like secret patterns you can learn to make it easier, instead of having to just memorize all the examples. Rules allow you to create your own sentences to learn from, instead of only learnign what you hear.

I have to agree with a part of hannah`s answer, not using corect tenses can easily change the meaning of what you really want to say and in this way the others misunderstand you.

Im english and when i was growing up i was never taught english grammer because you know this naturally
Ofcourse grammer is important to a certain length. When i speak spanish sometimes i dont use good grammer, but people understand what you are trying to say. However, sometimes when grammer is done incorrectly, it could change the complete meaning and mean that someone can not undertand what you are saying.
it is best to learn grammer of any language, otherwise how are you meant to comunicate fluently? Its best to learn it to aviod any missunderstandings and to know the languauge correctly..
