In 1954, Walt Disney's television show presented a four-part movie, "Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier." Davy Crockett was not very important in U.S. history. The movie was a good story, loosely based on fact.The theme song became a popular song hit.

The U.S. began on the east coast. During the 1800s it expanded westward until it it claimed land all the way to the Pacific ocean. The westward edge was "the frontier," and the first people to move into it were "pioneers" or "frontiersmen." The "winning of the West" has a mythic, epic status in U.S. culture. Some frontiersmen became culture heroes. (In the process, the nation committed injustices by taking land where native Americans were already living).

Clues: 1) "Politickin'" means "engaging in politics." Davy Crockett was a successful politician who served three terms in Congress. The song says he understood that he realized when his political career was over and returned home.

2) The "western march" is a reference to the westward territorial expansion.

3) Crockett was a famous rifleman. A rifle is a weapon with a long barrel that shoots very accurately.

4) Traveling from east to west is sometimes called "following the __________" because of the direction in which the __________ moves.
