Difference between these two statements
What is the difference between 1 & 2?
1. Anh ấy đưa cho tôi một cái bút.
2. Anh ấy có đưa cho tôi một cái bút.
What is the function of the có in #2?

Simply think of this as follows:
1) He gave me a pen.
2) He did give me a pen.
"có" in the second sentence just functions as an auxiliary verb.

Let's figure it out like this:
- The first sentence just expresses the fact that he had given to me a pencil. This is just like when you told a story, a thing happened, you just want to speak out an occurence.
- The second sentence can be an answer to the question: He had given to you a pencil, is that right? And of course, the answer should emphasize on the fact that: YES, HE HAD.
For other aspect, Dung Nguyen's answer is very excellent.

As a 100% Vietnamese, the two sentences describe the action of someone gives a pen to someone. If it is just written for that purpose, then the first sentence is perfect for native speaker level. The second is perfect when you wants to confirm the fact that he gave you the pen. Hope it helps. Enjoy your learning the language too, ;)
