Have you ever confused when using dictionary ?

One day, my coworkers had a chat about marital status with new manager in break time. In my turn, after introduced basic self information, my coworker wanted to tell our MG that I was ........( word express a woman is not married and other people think that she is too old to get married) just for fun but she did not know the exact english word so she turned to say that word in Japanese  ( our MG is Japanese ).I did not know that word at that time  too. Then I looked for that word in Vietnamese - English dictionary book and found out " have trouble getting husband " . I thought it sounded unnatural so I looked for that word by searching google and I got " On the shelf "

I wonder if " have trouble getting husband " is correct ? Is there any other word with the same meaning ?

Have a nice weekend !

"A is already 30 years old, she is still single . She has trouble getting married "

In my opinion, that is not a trouble at all for me if she is my daughter. So much for it, I would prefer to say: "she is not easy to find a favorable/eligible man to get married".  That is all.  If she is not my daughter, that is her private affair.

To talk about a single man you say "bachelor". There is no negative meaning like in the word "Spinster" that describes an older not married and usually childless woman.

As Susan rightly pointed out, it's not common to say, "I have trouble getting married/a husband," although it's grammatically correct and makes sense.

I do not think we have a word like ¨has trouble getting a husband.¨ We would probably say ¨She is desperate¨ in a joking way--- but this would only be done in situations of friends who tease each other.  Usually co-workers would try to be more professional, because that could really hurt someone´s feeling.

We rarely say ¨old maid¨ or ¨spinster¨ in the U.S. anymore.  Our culture has changed enough where a woman are not necessarily expected to get married before 40, if at all.

I guess you might say ¨She is single and desperate.¨

I guess, the words you are looking for that best fit your description are an old maid (a woman who has never been married and who is no longer young) or a spinster (an unmarried woman who is past the usual age for marrying and is considered unlikely to marry).
