I just saw this video on Youtube...

Hey everyone!

I just saw this inspirational video over on Youtube and it got me thinking about when I started learning Russian a couple of years ago. Everyone told me it would be difficult/impossible to do in Barcelona (if you're here on iTalki, you already know this is false!), but I went ahead and did it anyway. I'd like to know your reaction. What have you done in your life, even after everyone told you couldn't or that it would be a bad idea? Did it work out? Do you have any regrets? Your answer doesn't have to be about language learning, but it can be if you wish.

We called this in my country (breaking paddles) those people who are breaking other’s paddles to let them down and prevent us to go on I have aplenty of them around me since my childhood

They always say why you waste your time learning languages?what do you think your self ?you’re not an Einstein, not only about languages, about everything I do in my daily life, I worked before with someone used to make fun of my ideas or works , kept telling me that I can’t do any thing , I gave up from doing what I’d like to do then

I won’t say that they don’t hurt or let me down , and effect  me badly  , I still have regrets     and telling myself that I’m a loser many times . However  now I start to ignore all of them and even to my inner voice to do what I want to do although of my simple abilities,I have no other choice.

Thank you very much for inspiring video!

I just watched and subscribed to CaseyNeistat channel

It sounds like we've all had similar experiences. Have any of you noticed though, that the people who say these things are usually those who have never tried to do it themselves? This certainly sounds like what happened to you guys @raena and @mark. How can people tell you whether something is difficult of not if they've never done it before? Sure, there are always going to be trials and tests on our patience when we take on a new skill, but I really do believe that for every solution there is a solution.

I stopped telling people that I was learning Russian because I got fed up of being told it was hard. Another thing I tried was responding with two reasons why it would be easy (Russians are often very helpful because they are impressed you want to learn their language, there are lots of Russians in Barcelona etc.), although this can be tiring. I'd rather spend that time learning the language!

If you really love learning your new language, who cares what everybody else thinks? It's a shame that they don't enjoy it, but you certainly can. Besides, you can always come on here and speak with people who are supportive of your new venture!

@Diana if you read a little bit about Einstein, you'll see that even he wasn't 'bright' in the traditional sense. He got only modest results in University and spent years (about 20, if my memory is correct) working as a patent clerk whilst pondering over his theory of relativity. It was his focus on that one thing over many years that brought him his success. Imagine if Einstein had given up if he had got his results and believed he would never make a good scientist. Never give up hope!

My friends say me the same time like: Why are  you learning Italian or German. No one here speaks neither one nor another. Others say it  is too difficult to learn it on your own. It  is not like  with Russian when  your parents taught you automatically. My parents support me in  learning languages. My parents do not support me in finding about computer problems and sometimes it seems that I explode my  computer  (rarely  literally, but  already happened),  destroying  some  data and trying to recover it when it goes into the blue screen mode. My  parents say me  not to do anything until  they call for a technician and  on the next day they see a  perfectly  working computer with  all  saved family  pics  and  everything.  They calm down and call  me for  not summoning causes of  the  blue  screen appearing  anymore.I  feel  so  proud when  I manage  to  restore all. :D

Hey Rob!

Unfortunately I have an impressionable personality. So these kind of words will affect my decisions and thoughts. But I have a good experience about learning German language. I'm afraid it is a bit different from what you asked!

I didn't have any idea that German is a difficult language. When I decided to learn it, no one knew about it. So no one told me that it's gonna be so difficult for you! After a few sessions of my German course ( when I completely learned the basic grammar), Everyone started to tell me: oh Raena! Are you learning German?! it is a very difficult language! But that was too late! I'm really glad that I didn't hear their opinions at first! Otherwise I couldn't learn it at all.
