Comece a praticar!! por que a tua pergunta está em Inglês? você pode usar o Google tradutor no início, para ir se familiarizando, não é muito confiável de que a tradução estará 100% correta, mas pelo menos você estará tentando e, assim, irá progredir. Pode também começar a conhecer o vocabulário básico com o uso de app, como o Duolingo, por exemplo.

My tips are: Grammar, books, folk brazilian/portuguese music and someone who can talk with you.

have an objective: conventional Portuguese or business ... just as in every language there are the differences
Keep in touch with the language constantly: watch TV shows. Read as many online newspapers as possible, watch good movies with Portuguese subtitles, listen to Brazilian songs, and there are many alternatives for better performance in the language.
Read books and listen to music: Reading books and listening to music is always important because you will have contact with the authentic language, with expressions and slang.
Train your pronunciation a lot: One of the biggest problems for a foreigner is to train the pronunciation, since in Portuguese hhas accents accent like treble and circumflex and even the tilde.
