DAICHI
What does your name mean? I'm 大地(DAICHI).

Kanji has its own meaning, and my name means earth. My parents wanted me to become a big-hearted and generous man like earth, so they gave it to me.

How about you? What does your name mean?

In US culture, we don't pay much attention to the meanings of names. Parent may look them up when they are choosing a name for their baby, but that's all forgotten fairly quickly.

"Daniel" means "God is my judge."

"Smith" is an occupation name, a job. A "smith" is a person who works with metal. A blacksmith works with iron, and there are coppersmiths, silversmiths, goldsmiths--all of which can be last names, too. In my case, my family name was once "Kupferschmidt," which is German for "coppersmith," but when my family came to the United States at some point someone decided to shorten and Americanize it to "smith."

My name (Ксения in the Cyrillic script) is, as many Russian names, of Greek origin. The root is the same as in the word "xenophobia" for example; meaning "foreigner"/"alien"/"stranger". Also, in Ancient Greece the concept of hospitality towards those far from home was called ξενία /ksenia/ so I suppose my name could also mean "hospitable" — or maybe it was something like a friendly reminder to other people: "welcome the stranger". Who knows.

I remember some very horoscope-like books about names in Russian, something like "The mystery of your name", "Your name reveals more than you think" etc. but a quick google search shows that this and all that name compatibility stuff are not country-specific. In any case, I doubt many people in Russia pay much attention to these meanings; the "it's just a name" approach prevails.

My name is Batjargal. I am Mongolian. In Cyrillic it will be Батжаргал. It's a shame but I do not know old Mongolian script.

'Bat' means 'solid' or 'strong' and 'jargal' means 'happiness. The name can be given to either girls and boys although more boys have this name. Maybe because of that I didn't like my name when I was younger.
