Help learning cantonese (speaking + writing)
Hi I’m a beginner trying to learn cantonese, I know a handful of words and phrases for really simple discussion but it feels like I have hit a wall! Looking for someone to practice speaking with and learn writing, whilst also helping them learn English along the way!
Hopefully we can be good friends :)

To add to Dave’s spot-on comments, I’ll just mention “Colloquial Cantonese”, which is good for beginners, and the publishers (Routledge) offer all the audio for free on their website. The book is a bit pricey, but you could probably find a PDF online with relative ease. It uses mainly romanization (Yale, but with 6 tones, not 7. My teachers all speak with 6 tones — I’ve no idea where you can still hear 7 tones these days). The language is fairly useful, although, given the somewhat undocumented nature of the language, you'll want to have some authentic materials (try YouTube) and a teacher as well. Oh, yeah, I'm sure you'll find some good conversation partners too, as long as you keep at it.

Hi Zane

I was learning Cantonese myself for a while. (I began when I was working with refugees – mainly Cantonese speakers who had been expelled from Vietnam). Now I no longer have the time. There aren’t too many language resources for Cantonese (as compared to say Mandarin) but the following book I found to be one of the best:

Complete Cantonese by Hugh Baker and Pui-Kei Ho

It is in the “Teach Yourself” series. - Just thought I would mention it for you or anyone else who is learning this language. (And to show solidarity with the protesters currently fighting for their freedom in Hong Kong).
