How to clean marble worktops in your kitchen

For marble worktops you should avoid all acid-based cleaners as they can eat into the surface. A mild dilute solution of washing-up liquid will suffice. Be sure to rinse with plenty of water as any residue will dull the surface.

How do you clean your kitchen surfaces?

Dr. Ali,

I like to use (white-distilled) Vinegar and water on kitchen surfaces. This combination is good to use on about anything that you want to clean around the house. You should use more water to lower parts of vinegar (Caution: In the microwave-Vinegar can become combustible when heated on high) warm water is suggested. The smell of vinegar becomes low-key as soon as it dries. Rinse off with clear water. Happy Cleaning.

I agree with Alisha about stuff sold as "anti-bacterial". For marble I just use a dilute mixture of washing-up liquid.

You need to wash this off with plenty of water though as it tends to dull the surface.

I use a mixture of warm water, vinegar and a squeeze of washing-up liquid. The vinegar kills germs as well as any commercial product, (like Dr. Al says).

Don't waste your money on those "anti-bacterial" cleaners!

@ Kito

Vinegar should not be used for marble worktops as it causes a chemical reaction which will damage the surfaces.

That said, it is probably the best all-purpose cleaner you can find.

Vinegar contains acetic acid which is a natural disinfectant, killing many harmful bacteria. Use white vinegar with a 1:1 ratio of water for the most critical areas. The smell will dissipate faster than you might think, but if you’re concerned you can always add some peel from a citrus fruit such as a lemon or an orange.
