Fue - Preterite
Era - Imperfeect

Fue is the preterite form of ser, so it's for a single point in time. Think of it as refering to something that happened in the past but which had a conclusive beginning and end. For example:

En la fiesta fue un borde. - At the party he was a jerk.
He was a jerk at a definitive time, at the party, so use the preterite. Compare to this example:
La casa era muy bonita antes del terremoto. - The house was lovely before the earhquake.
Use the imperfect form of ser, era, in this case. Here the house is lovely up until a certain point, but not during a certain specified time. It was continuesly lovely for an unspecified time period. When you have unspecified times or repeated actions, use the imperfect.

Mirando ejemplos te vas a adecuar al uso del imperfecto, no es tan difícil.
Era es el presente de subjuntivo y fue el pasado simple del verbo ser
imperfect vs. preterite conjugation of the verb ser.
