Mandarin has many words? It has actually very few words. Just about 420 sound combinations. Multiply that by tones then you still have just around 1200 possible sounds.
That's the main reason why Mandarin can't adopt a phonetic writing system. Pinyin is very good as a phonetic system to explain characters, but very impracticable as character replacement.

chinese words have meaning just in a sentence or situation. one character (or sound) is nothing for meaning as usual. so it is a problem.
