For example, the next book or the next train. Is it کتاب بعد or کتاب بعدی.

Informal we use both but ی in Farsi is ratio suffix so کتاب بعدی is correct

Both could be correct depending on the context
کتاب بعدی is more grammatical , however it's becoming more and more common to say کتاب بعد، it's just a bit less formal, that's all
