what is the difference between american accent and british accent ?
as we know english has many different accents ,because people speak english in their own way,but what i am going to say is about american accent and british accent, which is i am very confused about. I find that the way american people talk is retroflex for every singlel word, and british people is like more harder, very short and fast .i watched a video that an english expert teach how to recognize all the english accents.also, like irish accent ,australian accent and Scottish accent.
I really like to know more about it . but i have one question : do all the english speakers understand each other when they speak english with their own accents ?
by the way ,I dont know if it is right to write this essay, because my english is terrible ,I speak the worst english that people never heard. please jugde me whatever you want. thanks !

I completely agree with Jocelyn.
I'm British and feel I can just about understand everybody who speaks English (except occasionally for a very strong Scottish accent). The Welsh, Scottish, English and Irish accent are all very different, but at the end of the day we all speak the same language.

Your English is very good :)
Well as an American, most of the time I can understand other English speakers. However, sometimes people have very thick accents and they are difficult to understand because they pronounce words in a way such that they sound completely different from how I understand the words. For example, many people in northern Britain (or norther England for that matter) have these very thick accents that makes it sometimes near impossible to understand what they're saying. I have a standard American accent (think of how Barack Obama talks, that's a standard American accent) but I live in the South (Southeastern US, infamous for our strange accents) and I can understand people down here who speak with a thick southern accent; however, some people, even many Americans, can't always understand what these people are saying. I only understand because I grew up hearing this, so I understand.
Also--a small correction. There's technically no "British accent"--people make this mistake a lot. Britain is made of Wales, Scotland, and England, all of which (at least to me) have pretty distinct accents. :)

i think that if we can speak English fluently and everyone can understand what we want to say is the most good accent. :)
