Compared with underground mining, surface mining is much more efficient. This method is commonly used nowaday in different countries, however has its negative and positive aspects. Firstly, mining is necesary because through it we obtain minerals and materials that we use in everyday life. All the minerals and materials that we use in our daily lives are extracted from open pit mining. Without mined minerals, we would not have the useful products, such as; tools, fuel, televisions, lights, transports, etc. For example, everytime you turn on the television, you are ulilizing 35 different minerals produced trough mining. Secondly, mining provides benefit for certain groups of people such as mine employees and mining companies. Many local and International invest in open pit mining increasing profits and empoyment not only in mining but also in other sectors. Therefore, the miners working conditions are safer because they are not exposed to explosive poison gas dangers. The mining companies use geologists, engineers, and sophisticated sensing equipment to check pit wall stability. On the other hand, mining is very damaging to the ecosystems. An open pit mining operation eliminates any biologic life at the surface. Vegetation is stripped, and the surface at the dig site is left completely barren. Moreover, abandoned mining pit can also pose extreme risks. The slope of the mining walls can be steep or even vertical and the structural stability of access points is constantly changing as erosion occurs. Furthermore, another important issue related to mining is the risks of pollution. The AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) in which the water supplies become acidic, a serious environmental concern, which is caused by the flooding of the abandoned mines, consequently the water gets unhealthy not only for humans but also for animals and plants.This polluted water can kill life along water sources for miles. All things consider, mining brings us greats economic benefits, Unfortunately this economy comes with a high environmental cost. However, It should be therefore, a really aware and responsible administration of this activity regarding the political aspects which can provide laws to protect the planet.
