Seven Surprising Facts about Education in Taiwan (Part 1)
With its proximity to Japan, it is interesting to compare Taiwan’s educational system with Japan’s. Can Japanese universities learn anything useful from Taiwanese models?
Conversely, does Japan still have anything useful to teach Asian neighbours such as Taiwan?
Let us examine some of the ways that higher education in these two countries are similar and different.
(1) Class length and frequency
Most university classes on Taiwan consist of fifty-minute segments rather than ninety-minute blocks. Some classes combine two segments, with a ten-minute break in between.
Most research suggests that shorter classes twice a week are often better suited to the vast majority of elementary language learners than longer single block schedule classes once a week (Wallinger, 2000).
The frequency of classes in Taiwan and Japan also varies: whereas Japanese university classes typically meet fifteen sessions per semester, in Taiwan eighteen classes per semester is more common.
