The Brief History of the English Language   [In the main title always capitalize the first, last, and all important words.]

The birthplace of the English language was not England, but North Germany and the Netherlands. Also, in nearby areas, there were Latin speakers from the Romans. The melding of these two languages became Proto-English later, as well as what is called Old English. Old English was a borrowed language since it used 2,000 words from Old Norse and 400 Latin words from Christianity. Beowulf was written in Old English and it is hard to read for modern people.

With the Norman conquest of England* in 1066, there were two groups of language users: kings and noblemen. The kings spoke Old Norman but common people spoke Old English. Two main changes emerged: the dissolution of the n. and adj. ending; the plurals’ ending by “s” instead of by “en”. Also, English borrowed 10,000 words from French. In this period of time, we call it Middle English, and the most famous example is Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.

In 15 CE-16 CE, after the great vowel shift and the printing press, more people could read and travel, so a number of words from different languages were assimilated, mainly from Italin and Yiddish. Shakespeare was a famous person at that time and that language became what we know now as Early Modern English.

Later, the influence of the Industrial Revolution involved many more new words from Early Modern English to Modern English.

English today has two major variations: British English and American English. These are spoken by an estimated 400 million people, and there are a total of 1 billion English speakers including many regional varieties of English which have developed around the world.
