Today,I am going to tell you a fairy tale about Shennong. He is a legendary ruler of China and a cultural hero who is also known as the Emperor of the Five Grains. He taught people the practices of agriculture and pottery. So he was revered as “the deity of medicine ”,whose name literally means "Divine Farmer".
Shennong also made a great contribution to discovering various herbs for treating diseases.Long time ago, people did not know which plants were safe to eat, they frequently ate poisonous plants, this made people sick or even die. So Shennong decided to taste herbs to save them.He traversing the mountains and rivers, tasting various herbs to understand their toxicity and medicinal properties. And he recorded their effects on his body in the "Shennong’s Root and Herbal Classic".
Some herbs brought relief to the pain, while others caused even worse conditions . But he did not give up. He ate hundreds of herbs, and some of them are really potent. He usually got poisoning from tasting herbs even 12 times a day. After a long search , he found a kind of grass which could detoxify harmful things. He named this plant “tea”, and he usually ate tea leaves as the antidote when he was poisoned by the unknown herbs. Supposedly , he ate a yellow flower of a weed that caused his intestines. There wasn’t enough time for him to eat the tea leaves. So sadly, he died. He sacrificed himself to save humanity, thus people called him the “Bodhisattva of Medicine”, and people will forever commemorate him .
We can learn a lot from his spirit of devotion from this story. In our life, there are many people like Shennong who sacrifice themselves to protect other people’s lives. Like doctors and nurses, they always undertake the mission of curing diseases.During the pandemic, they did not put their own safety first, in their belief, patients always came first. They are angel in white,we should also learn from them.
