This is for a speech in a class and I am supposed to use the idiom “defeat the purpose”
Thank you so much in advance.
Today I learned the idiom "defeat the purpose" that means to work against one’s own motives.
I want to give an example about this.
You eat a sugar-free dessert in order to reduce your sugar consumption and get in shape
But you add an dressing to make it good taste
I can say that adding syrup defeats the purpose of choosing a sugar-free dessert.
오늘은 자신의 동기에 반하는 일을 하는 것을 뜻하는 "목적에서 벗어나다"라는 관용어를 배웠습니다.
나는 이것에 대한 예를 들고 싶습니다.
당신은 설탕 소비를 줄이고 건강한 몸을 만들기 위해 무설탕 디저트를 먹습니다.
하지만 좋은 맛을 내기 위해 드레싱을 첨가합니다.

Today I learned the idiomatic expression "defeat the purpose" which means to oppose to something or someone’s own motives.
I'd like to give(you) an example of this.
Imagine You eat a sugar-free dessert in order to reduce your sugar consumption and get in shape
But you add a topping to make it taste good
I can tell that adding syrup defeats the purpose of a sugar-free dessert chosing.
