It was rainy today. Last night, a video about the origin of Chinese calligraphy characters caught my eye. It was all about glyphs. So today, after finishing my homework, I delved into the topic on the internet and discovered some shocking, dark knowledge about the Chinese glyphs on tortoise shells from thousands of years ago. These ancient characters, which are the ancestors of today’s Chinese characters, are mostly bloody and even terrifying. For example, the character that means “people” today actually developed from a drawing of a knife stabbing an eye. This suggests how people, or slaves, were made to be obedient. They literally gouged out people’s eyeballs to subdue them. Some other characters depict the bloody nature of human sacrifices, showing how people were cut in half. Ancient China was horrific, and all of this was well recorded in our language. I wonder how our ancestors survived through such a dark period. It’s creepy yet fascinating, and I couldn’t stop learning more.

I didn’t know that! Doesn’t sound great.
