My thoughts are... I would amend the verb to 'resorted to'. I rarely hear or see the word 'befitting', but it works here. The sentence needs a comma, or two.

One more small suggestion . . . I would substitute "an appropriate reply" for "a befitting reply" -- "befitting" is a word that will be understood, but that is not commonly used
