Read the following story- I was talking down the street when I saw a cat. *note here that -a- is used because you have not to this point had a relationship with this cat. It was following me on the sidewalk all the way down the road. *note here that -it- is used because you have already established what -it- is so there is some familiarity. This and that are less concerned about familiarity, and more concerned with distance in time, space, location. This cat that is next to me is black. That cat outside is white. This is my book.
