Here is an interesting description of basic English sentence patterns: Sentence pattern #1 --Subject + be verb + adverbial To be pattern #1 An adverbial describes when, where, why, or how. -New York is on the East coast. -The performance will be next month. -He is in the hospital for his health. Sentence pattern #2 – Subject + be verb + subject complement. To be pattern #2 A subject complement is the noun phrase or adjective that follows the to be verb. It describes the subject. -You will be late. -My wife was an Olympic swimmer. -My favorite sport is swimming. Sentence pattern #3 -- Subject + linking verb + subject complement. Linking verb pattern A linking verb links the subject to a noun phrase or adjective. -Making a meal for thirty ( is/seems) time consuming. -The weather seems warm. -The woman looked beautiful. Sentence pattern #4 -- Subject + intransitive verb. Intransitive verb pattern An intransitive verb requires no complement. -The dog died. -The audience laughed. -She coughed.

(They gave the money to Cindy.) -We did the President a big favor. ( We did a big favor for the President.) Sentence pattern #7 -- Subject + transitive verb + object + complement. Transitive verb with two complements. (Type 2) A transitive verb, which requires a direct object to receive the action, as well as an object complement to describe the object. -My Uncle called me an idiot. -We elected him the class president. -The artist made the picture too large.
